December 2011

Dear Relatives & Friends,

Christmas is upon us and a time to reflect on our friends, relatives, and the past year. Our wish is that this finds all of you in good spirits and health, and that you have had a wonderful year.

Katherine passed all four sections of her CPA exam.  She worked as a supervisor of a group of people in doing tax returns for low income people this winter. This gave her a chance to apply her accounting skills she learned in college.  She also worked part time for an assistant chancellor at the University of Missouri. She assisted him in preparing for courses he taught.  In May she traveled with Wally to Michael and family in Nebraska.

Michael started to work with a new head pastor in the town church in January after the previous one retired.  He still enjoys working with the people from the country church where Michael’s house is located. This is the group of people they draw from for baby sisters.  The country church is one of Norwegian origin while the people in town are mostly of German descent.  In September Michael married two his and Alison friends at the Chapel at Valparaiso University.  They combined that into a vacation which included Noah being able to play on the beach at the Indiana Dunes State Park on Lake Michigan for the first time.  At the end of October they celebrated Noah’s second birthday.  This included a visit by Wally and his first time visit to a pumpkin patch.  Alison’s Kindermusic program in Albion has been a success and is expanding.

Ann continues to do well at the Surrey Nursing Home.  As in the previous three years there has been little change. She eats and does not have any medical issues.  However, she responds very little to people.

Wally traveled to Michigan twice, Pennsylvania, Iowa, and Tennessee.  In Pennsylvania he toured Gettysburg, the Amish area, and Hersey where they make the chocolate bars.  In Iowa Wally toured a John Deere engine factory, the Amana colonies, saw the Field of Dreams, and had lunch on a Mississippi River cruise.  Trips to Michigan included visits to Mackinaw Island, see the Bavarian Festival, attend a high school graduation party, and see his cousins at a Weber Reunion in Richville.  Early in the year Wally already started to plan for another trip to Germany in September of next year to participate in the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Frankenmuth to Gunzenhausen sister city relationship.  He will be joining a group from Frankenmuth in Germany.  Wally stays active with genealogical group activities and research.  This year was the 150th anniversary of the major part of the Kern family arriving in the Frankenmuth area.

We wish all of you a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
